The Homorod-Kukullo LEADER LAG (Local Action Group) Association was founded in 2016 with 39 founding members: 15 local public authorities, 20 non-governmental organizations and 4 entrepreneurs, in accordance with the requirement to have over 50% private partners. The total area of the territory covered by the LAG is 1207.97 km2 and includes 85 localities. The population is 34,600 people, according to the 2011 Census.
The territory of the LAG borders Mureș County in the west and southwest, with Harghita Mountains in the north and northeast, Brașov County in the south, and Baraolt Mountains in the southeast.
The natural aspect is influenced by the rivers: Homorodul Mare, Homorodul Mic, Cușmed, Târnava Mare, Feernic and Goagiu that cross the territory long and wide.
One part of the area is referred to as ‘the Land of Natural Waters’, which spring from the volcanic mountains, and the other part, ‘the Land of Vegetables’. There are many protected natural areas in the region, so the territory has a very valuable natural wealth.
Mineral waters offer, on the one hand, bathing facilities, and on the other hand, they are suitable sources for drinking water. Due to their high salt content, some are used in the preparation and seasoning of dishes.
The clean mountain air, the abundance of medicinal plants, as well as the specific natural conditions give a special character not only to the landscape, but also to the traditional local foods, which have a special aroma. This complex set of ingredients creates the uniqueness of the Szekler cuisine, the local people and this region.
Over the centuries, our ancestors have developed a culture and a style of authentic construction, leaving us a legacy of many traditional churches and houses.
The natural and cultural heritage and the architectural heritage of the area attracts many visitors.
There are no significant industries present in our area. Agriculture (plant cultivation and animal husbandry) represents the major source of employment for locals.
The Homorod-Kukullo LEADER LAG Association received funding in the amount of 2,556,311.31 Euro for the development of the rural environment, so in the period 2017-2020 the local actors can access funds for the following financing measures:
